How to Groom Lion-Headed Rabbits

The lionhead rabbit requires more grooming than short-haired rabbit breeds and this should always be taken into consideration before bringing a rabbit in to your home. The lionhead is a breed of rabbit that has been developed to exhibit a mane of long hair around its head. The rabbit can also have long hair around its flank. The long hair can easily become matted and dirty, which can be uncomfortable for the rabbit and also increase the risk of your pet suffering from fly strike, which is a potentially fatal condition, according to CottonTails Rabbit Rescue. As a responsible owner, it is important that you groom your lionhead three times a week.

Comb your rabbit all over with a specialized cat grooming comb. Pay particular attention to your rabbit's mane and flank area, around the tail. Be very gentle when brushing your rabbit as his skin is extremely fragile. Comb out any mats in the fur by starting with the ends of the hair and moving closer to the roots as the matted hair is loosened.

Cut out any tough mats in your lionhead rabbit's fur with a pair of specialized hair-cutting scissors. Be extremely careful when doing this to avoid cutting into your rabbit's skin. Only attempt this if the lionhead is willing to sit still for the duration of the grooming session. If you do not feel confident about trimming your rabbit's hair, book an appointment with a professional pet groomer.

Turn your rabbit on to its back and sit with it on your knee, remembering to support its head in the crook of one arm. Wash your rabbit's bottom area beneath the tail if there are any droppings attached to the fur. Use a wash cloth dipped in tepid water to clean the fur. Comb through the hair to remove any mats.
