How to Build a Portable Rabbit Pen

Give your rabbit the perfect home by building a rabbit pen from scratch. Using materials that can be found at hardware stores like Lowe's and Home Depot, you can build a PVC frame that holds one large wire cage or a few smaller cages. The pen will be easy to clean, and both the cage and frame will be lightweight and easy to move around.

  • 16 feet of PVC, 1-inch
  • 4 PVC ells, 1-1/4-inch
  • 8 PVC tees, 1-inch

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the 1-1/4-inch PVC pipe into two pieces, each 40 inches in length.

    • 2

Cut the 1-inch PVC pipe into two 40-inch pieces, four 32-inch pieces, eight 9-inch pieces, and four 4-inch pieces.

    • 3

Glue a 1-1/4-inch to 1-inch reducer into one arm of each 1-1/4-inch ell.

    • 4

Glue the free arm of one 1-1/4-inch ell to one end of a 1-1/4-inch PVC pipe piece. Glue the free of another 1-1/4-inch ell to the other end of the 1-1/4-inch PVC pipe piece. Repeat for the second 1-1/4-inch PVC pipe piece. Ensure that all pieces remain on the same plane by clamping them in place to a flat surface while the glue dries.

    • 5

Glue a 4-inch length of 1-inch PVC pipe into each of the four reducers.

    • 6

Glue the center arm of a 1-inch PVC tee to the end of a 32-inch length of one-inch PVC. Glue the other end of the 32-inch, 1-inch PVC piece to the center arm of a second 1-inch PVC tee. Repeat for the three remaining 32-inch, 1-inch PVC pipe pieces. Again, ensure that all pieces remain on the same plane by clamping them in place to a flat surface while the glue dries.

    • 7

Glue the free arm of each 32-inch PVC assembly to the 4-inch pieces attached to each top bar. Make sure that the 32-inch length runs at a 90-degree angle to the 40-inch length of 1-1/4-inch PVC.

    • 8

Glue a 9-inch piece into each tee.

    • 9

Glue the last two side bars to the 9-inch pieces.

    • 10

Glue the remaining 9-inch pieces into the empty tee arms.

    • 11

Glue a 1-inch ell to each end of the two remaining 40-inch pieces.

    • 12

Glue the ells to the ends of the free 9-inch pieces.

    • 13

Allow all glue to dry thoroughly before using the pen.

    • 14

Lower the cage into the PVC frame with the cage door facing toward you.

    • 15

Slide the 40-inch aluminum conduit pipes over the front of the PVC frame, into the top of the cage near the front, out of the top of the cage near the back and over the rear of the PVC frame. The cage will be supported by the conduits, and the conduits will be supported by the frame.

    • 16

Tie the cage to the frame with 17-gauge steel wire.

    • 17

Finish the pen by adding accessories to the cage, such as a water valve, hay feeder and bed. Place a drop pan or other waste collection container below the cage.
