How to Rid Domestic Rabbits of Fleas

Domesticated rabbits are cute and fluffy, but if they become infested with fleas, it can be a serious problem. Fleas are difficult to kill, and the rabbit may scratch constantly and harm its skin. There are several ways to get rid of the fleas, but you might need to try more than one method before you find one that works for you and your rabbit.

Instructions

Sprinkle your rabbit with an insecticide that contains 5 percent carbaryl. Go to the pet store and find a flea powder that contains this ingredient and is suitable for rabbits.

    • 2

Rub the powder onto the rabbit's skin. Hold the rabbit steady and manipulate its fur between your fingers so that the powder moves onto the skin.

    • 3

Brush the fur of your rabbit with a fine-toothed flea comb. Although this will not get rid of the fleas, it will help remove the eggs and prevent them from settling on the rabbit's fur.

Clean the rabbit's hatch, your house and any areas where the rabbit may be, such as an outdoor playpen. Unhygienic habitats encourage fleas to breed, so the areas need to be regularly cleaned with a mild detergent.
