How to Get Rid of Any Bugs on Bunnies

Bunnies are susceptible to a variety of bugs. The most common bug infestations on rabbits are fleas, ticks and mites. Treating a bunny with a parasite problem is different than treating a dog or a cat. For example, flea collars and flea dips can be fatal to rabbits. Instead, veterinarians recommend using insect powders, flea combs and topical products to treat bug infestations on bunnies.

Instructions

  1. Insect Powders

    • 1

Purchase an insect powder that contains 5-percent carbaryl insecticide. A commonly known brand is Sevin dust. Refrain from purchasing items that contain ingredients poisonous to bunnies such as pennyroyal, peppermint, eucalyptus or other strong herbs.

    • 2

Dust your bunny with the powder and work it through the fur all the way down to your bunny's skin.

    • 3

Repeat the dusting process every few days until the bugs are gone.

    Using a Flea Comb

    • 4

Purchase a flea comb from your local pet store.

    • 5

Comb through all of your bunny's fur. Pay particular attention to the areas around the ears and legs. Extract as many of the bugs as you can.

    • 6

Repeat the combing process daily until the bugs are gone.

    • 7

Kill any extracted bugs by squashing them or drowning them in a bowl of water or alcohol.

    Using a Topical Flea Treatment

    • 8

Purchase a topical treatment such as Advantage or Frontline. Be sure to avoid any brands that contain permythrin because this can be toxic for bunnies.

    • 9

      Read the directions carefully.

    • 10

Apply the recommended dose to the neck of your bunny.

    • 11

Reapply the topical treatment on a monthly basis, if necessary.
