The Proper Way to Remove a Rabbit From a Cage

Rabbits are cute pets that are soft to hold, but it is important to remember that nothing in a rabbit's natural life equates to being picked up by a human. Unlike cats or dogs, rabbits are not usually used to being picked up, so approaching the situation with care and understanding is important for the safety of both you and your furry friend. If you need to get your rabbit out of the cage for some much-needed cleaning, take it slow for the best results.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the cage and wait a moment to see how your rabbit reacts. Some rabbits are friendly and will come to you, while others may run and hide. If your rabbit is well socialized, this process will likely be much easier.

    • 2

Slowly reach into the rabbit cage and gently pet the bunny. This is a good way to calm the rabbit down, but watch out for possible kicks or bites.

    • 3

Take the rabbit's chest in your right hand. This will stop it from running forward.

    • 4

Turn the rabbit's rear legs toward you using your left hand. The rabbit should be facing away from you at this point.

    • 5

Place your left hand under the rabbit's groin and use both hands to lift the rabbit to your chest. The rabbit should end up facing your left shoulder.

    • 6

Pick up your rabbit at least once a day to help build its familiarity with this activity. The more you do this with the rabbit, the easier it will be to pick it up in the future.
