Instructions

    • 1

Scrub off the surface rust from the cage bars with a steel wool pad.

    • 2

Put on thick rubber gloves to protect your hands from the acidic rust remover.

    • 3

Pour enough rust remover onto a steel wool pad to cover the surface area. Apply the rust remover to all rusted areas of the cage. Be careful because rust removers contain strong acids as their main ingredients, such as phosphoric acid or oxalic acid.

    • 4

Leave the rust remover on the cage for five to 10 minutes, depending on the amount of rust.

    • 5

Remove the rust remover from the cage with paper towels.

    • 6

Dampen paper towels to remove any remaining residue, and let the cage completely dry out.

    • 7

Paint on a rust-proof primer using a small paint brush. The primer provides a barrier against moisture.

    • 8

Brush on the paint in the color of your choice. Use rust-proof-paint if possible. Check to make certain the paint is suitable for use around animals.
