How to Care for a Rabbit's Hurt Foot

Rabbits can injure their feet by accidentally kicking something hard, in rough play or by getting their foot trapped in something. The injury might be minor or very serious. Rabbits often hide their pain so you may not be able to tell just how bad the injury is from your rabbit's behavior. If your rabbit has a hurt foot, take it to a vet as soon as possible and follow the vet's instructions for aftercare.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick your rabbit up gently and put him in the carrier. Don't touch the injured foot.

    • 2

Take the rabbit to your vet, preferably one with experience of rabbits. The House Rabbit Society provides a list of recommended veterinarians in the United States if you are not already registered with a vet.

    • 3

Separate your rabbit from other pets unless advised to do otherwise. Other rabbits, dogs and cats can make the injury worse in play. Don't allow children to play with or disturb the rabbit until he is better.

    • 4

Give the rabbit any painkillers or other medication as prescribed.

    • 5

Keep the rabbit's pen or cage very clean to reduce the risk of infections. Replace bedding and wash out the litter tray with a mild disinfectant daily.

    • 6

Watch for the injury getting worse. If your rabbit becomes less mobile, more listless or stops eating, then contact your vet again.
