How to Deter Rabbits From Chewing Brake Lines

Wild rabbits populate both urban and rural areas. While a bunny in the yard is a cute sight, these animals often chew on items and damage your property. According to Connie Isbell, author of "Rabbits for Dummies," people often worry that wild rabbits will chew the brake lines of their car, even if it's not all that common. If you worry about this, you can deter rabbits from chewing on your brake lines using a couple of deterrents.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1/2 cup linseed oil into a small spray bottle. You can purchase linseed oil from most natural grocers. If you have purchased Bitter small animal deterrent spray from a pet store, skip to Step 4.

    • 2

Pour 2 tablespoons of blood meal into the linseed oil. Blood meal can be purchased from gardening stores.

    • 3

Screw the lid tightly onto the small spray bottle and shake until thoroughly mixed.

    • 4

Consult your car's user manual to locate a strong point on the frame that will support the car's weight and the exposed brake lines on the underside of your car. This is different for each type of car.

    • 5

Place a car jack beneath the strong point of the frame. Lift the car up so there is enough space to access the brake lines.

    • 6

Lie beneath your car and spray an even coating of the deterrent onto your brake lines. According to Marinell Harriman, author of "House Rabbit Handbook," either mixture is distasteful to rabbits.

    • 7

Re-apply the spray once a week for continued chewing deterrence.
