Plans to Build a Rabbit Hutch

As with all DIY projects, building a rabbit hutch requires careful consideration of pertinent factors such as location of the hutch, and the size and weight of the rabbit. Apart from location and size, you should also consider what types of materials to use, as it will directly affect the cost of the project.

  1. Size and Location

    • Make sure that the hutch is not oversized. A hutch that is too deep or too tall will make it cumbersome for you to reach the rabbit. For a standard-sized rabbit an enclosure that measures 24-by-30-by-18 inches will give the rabbit adequate space. In addition, the hutch should be located in an easily-accessible area with moderate sunlight.

    Materials

    • Galvanized welded wire is an ideal material for the cage because it is strong enough to ward off predatory animals. Ensure that the roof is adequately weatherproofed by using metal or shingles and avoid plywood because it will not last long.

    Construction

    • Begin from the inside of the hutch. Build it without the top and then attach the sides and legs of the hutch. Check that the cage height is at a reasonable level and attach the cage top. Add the roof and upper framing. Avoid using varnishes or paints.
