How to Tell a Boy & Girl Rabbit Apart

Sexing rabbits can be confusing and difficult when you first learn how. Young rabbits are generally harder to sex than older rabbits. However, with practice, you can easily tell the difference between a doe (female) and a buck (male). Does and bucks often have very similar looking genitals, mainly because the sex organs "pop" out. With older rabbits, the gender can sometimes be apparent by its physical appearance. But to accurately determine the gender, especially on young rabbits, it is best to look at the opening of the genitals.

Instructions

    • 1

Cradle the rabbit in your arms and turn it so it is on its back. You can also choose to lay the rabbit on your lap with its belly up.

    • 2

Place one hand under the rabbit's anus and the other hand above it. If the rabbit is small enough, you can use one hand, using your thumb and forefinger.

    • 3

Apply slight pressure to both sides of the anus. This will cause the anus and genitals to protrude.

    • 4

Examine the genitals, which are above the anus, farthest from the tail.

If the rabbit is female, you will see a small mound with a slit running from the tip of the mound and ends where the genitals meet its body.

If the rabbit is male, you will see a small tubular penis with a small opening at the tip.
