How to Build a Wooden Rabbit Cage

The House Rabbit Society says, "A cage should be at least 4 times the size of your bunny--more if he is confined for a large amount of the day." When it comes to the floor of a rabbit cage, the House Rabbit Society says, "Rabbits were not designed to live on wire floors...If you must use a cage with a wire floor, you need to provide your rabbit with a resting board or rug for her to sit on, otherwise she will spend all of her time in her litter box." Building a wooden rabbit cage can be done in an afternoon with all the right materials and tools.

Instructions

A wood pallet can be used as the floor of the cage.

Turn the pallet on its side so that it's standing upright. Nail a two-by-four that is 6 feet long to each of its four corners with 3-inch nails using a hammer. Position these two-by-fours so that they extend three-and-one-half feet on one side of the pallet and two-and-one-half feet on the other side of the pallet. The 2-1/2 side will be the top cage portion and the 3-1/2 side will be the bottom legs portion of the rabbit cage.

This is an example of a circular saw.

Turn the pallet so that it stands erect on all four legs. Cut three pieces of plywood 4 feet long and two-and-one-half-feet wide for three of the four sides of the rabbit cage using a circular saw. Screw these three sides to the four two-by-fours using two-inch wood screws and an electric screw gun. Screw six screws in per each side of the two-by-fours. The tops of the boards should be flush with the ends of the two-by-fours.

Cut a piece of plywood that is 4 feet wide and 5 feet long. Screw this piece of plywood to the top of the rabbit's cage using two screws in each corner. Position this piece so that it overhangs 6 inches off the front and 6 inches off the back of the cage.

This door was built with chicken wire.

Cut a piece of plywood two-and-one-half-feet wide and 4 feet long for the front of the rabbit cage. Draw a line down the middle of this board across its width with a pencil. The middle will be at 2 feet since the board is 4 feet long. Draw a square on the right side of the line 4 inches in from the outer edge of the board. Cut this square out. This will be the door into the cage.

Cut a piece of plywood that will be big enough to cover this hole on each side by 2 inches. Screw two hinges onto this piece of wood on the right hand side of the board at its edge using half-inch screws and an electric screw gun. Place this board over the door opening and attach the hinges to the rabbit cage with at least four screws. Each hinge will have two to four holes per hinge.

Here is an example of an eye-hole hook latch.

Screw an eye hole screw into the middle of the cage on the center line. Screw an eye hole screw and latch hook combination into the door of the rabbit cage at the appropriate distance away from the opposing eye hole screw on the center line. Predetermine the distance between the eye hole screw and the latch hook before screwing the latch hook into the door.

Here is an example of a hole saw and drill bit.

Cut 3-inch air holes in the wood rabbit cage every 3 inches around the entire eave of the rabbit cage an inch below the roof. Use an electric drill with a 3-inch hole saw.
