Bacterial Infection
-
If a rabbit's skin is flaky and stinky around the thighs and tail, it is likely a bacterial infection, according to Dana Krempels, Ph.D. These are commonly seen in warm, humid climates and should be treated immediately by a veterinarian.
Fighting Other Rabbits
-
If you have more than one pet rabbit, they may be fighting when you are not around. Check for any scabs and cuts. Prevention is as simple as spaying your pet rabbits, states Krempels.
Overgrooming
-
A rabbit's skin may become irritated if they are grooming themselves more than normal. Overgrooming is not normal behavior and is often a sign that they are not getting enough exercise. Allow them more running time and introduce new toys.
Mites
-
There are several types of mites a rabbit may have, and most of them will cause severe itching in your rabbit. They will usually look like dandruff and require medication from your veterinarian to eliminate, states Krempels.
Ringworm Fungus
-
Skin will become slightly irritated with small, raised spots when a rabbit has ringworm fungus, explains Krempels. Topical medications will help relieve and eliminate this fungal problem.
