How to Treat Rabbits With Terramycin

Keeping rabbits is a common practice for many animal lovers. Rabbits were traditionally raised for their meat and fur, but their gentle dispositions and low-maintenance lifestyle have also made them a popular pet. However, rabbits are prone to a number of health problems and should be carefully monitored for any signs of illness. Terramycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a variety of conditions and can be used to keep your rabbit healthy.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your veterinarian for an accurate diagnosis of your rabbit's condition. Terramycin is used to treat a number of conditions, including respiratory infections, and will help boost the immune system. This medication is available without a prescription, but your vet will advise you on the proper dosage for your rabbit based on body weight, normally 1/8 teaspoon per pound daily for 14 days.

Move the sick rabbit to an isolation hutch to prevent him from spreading any illnesses to healthy rabbits. Fill a metal feed dish with pellets and place in the hutch. Add a dose of Terramycin powder to the water bottle and top off with clean water, shaking to combine. Rabbits typically consume one full bottle per day, so refill with medication each morning.

    • 3

Pour the antibiotic powder over the pellets if the rabbit refuses to drink the medicated water. The finely ground powder will coat the feed, and your rabbit will ingest the medication as he eats. You can add a few drops of water to help the medication stick if necessary.

Add a dose of Terramycin to a bowl and stir in 1 tablespoon of applesauce if he won't eat the powder-coated pellets. Place the mixture in a clean syringe and force-feed it to your rabbit. Gently stick the syringe as far back on the tongue as possible and squeeze the applesauce into his mouth. Continue force-feeding your rabbit for 14 days as directed by your vet.
