Instructions for Building a Rabbit Hutch

A rabbit hutch is a home for a rabbit. Hutches usually are made of wood and have wire meshing on the outside. These hutches are helpful for people who want to keep rabbits as household pets or raise rabbits for a competition. Hutches are especially suitable for those who want to keep a rabbit outside. Instructions

    • 1

Cut four boards to 48 inches long, and then cut eight boards to 24 inches long, according to MonsterGuide.net. Connect one 48-inch board to a 24-inch board so that they appear to be in the shape of the letter "L." Do this by attaching the end of the 24-inch board to the last two inches of the 48-inch piece using a hammer and nails. Then, connect a second 48-inch board to the opposite side of the 24-inch board in the same fashion so that you now have a "U" shape. Finally, attach a second 24-inch board to the 48-inch boards so that you have a rectangle.

    • 2

Place the rectangle frame on a workbench so that one of the two 48-inch boards faces you and the shorter boards are directed away from you. Then, connect another 24-inch piece to each corner of the frame so that the boards point upward and the four-inch widths of these boards face you. Next, connect a 48-inch piece between the two 24-inch pieces facing you. You now should have two perpendicular rectangles.

    • 3

Repeat Step 2 on the opposite side of the workbench, nailing another 48-inch board between the 24-inch upright boards there. Nail a 24-inch piece at the top of the two 24-inch upright pieces, and turn the contraption 180 degrees to repeat the step. At the end, you should have a rectangle on two sides and on the top and bottom. The ends will create a two-foot square.

Cut a couple two-foot-square pieces of plywood and connect them to the square ends of your new hutch. Then, cut a rectangular piece of plywood that is 24 inches by 48 inches. Attach this to the back part of the hutch. Nail a piece of chicken wire that is 28 inches by 48 inches to the bottom of the hutch and then a piece of chicken wire that is 24 inches by 24 inches to the top of the hutch on the left half. Cut a piece of plywood that is 24 inches by 24 inches and attach this to the top of the hutch on the right half of the top as well.

    • 5

Cut four pieces of board. Two should be 46 inches long and two should be 24 inches long. Connect these boards to create a rectangle, and nail a piece of plywood that is 23 inches by 24 inches to the right half of this rectangle. Next, nail a piece of chicken wire that is 23 inches by 24 inches to the right half of the rectangle. You now have your hutch door.

Connect the hinges to the long top of the door. Then attach the other ends of the hinges to the board that faces the front of the hutch so that you can lift the door upward. Next, add the hook and eye latching mechanism to the door. Your hutch is ready for a rabbit.
