Rabbit Cataracts

If you're the owner of a pet rabbit and you're concerned that your rabbit is developing cataracts, rest assured that this is a fairly common problem, which can potentially be corrected with early detection.
  1. Features

    • A cataract in a rabbit's eye is a noticeable clouding over of the lens inside the eye. Cataracts are not preventable, and usually caused by a bacterial infection.

    Significance

    • Cataracts can cause gradual vision loss in rabbits if not properly detected. If left untreated, cataracts can cause glaucoma.

    Treatment

    • Laser surgery can remove cataracts that are detected early. Medication is often recommended after surgery to deal with the bacterial infection.

    Warning

    • If the cataract is not removed, it is possible that your rabbit will become blind in the affected eye. Your rabbit can continue to live a normal life, however, as long as you adjust his environment accordingly.

    Time Frame

    • PetMD states that many times, cataracts are present at birth, but can also occur spontaneously throughout the life span of your rabbit.
