How to Use Injectable Ivermectin As a Wormer in Rabbits

Several types of nematodes (parasitic worms) in rabbits can be treated with injectable ivermectin, known by the brand name Ivomec. Symptoms of these parasites include diarrhea, loss of appetite and weight loss. Ivermectin is considered safe to use in rabbits and effective, but only when used properly and only against specific nematodes. Therefore it is critical that a veterinarian be consulted prior to administering ivermectin to any rabbit.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your rabbit to your veterinarian. You will need a positive diagnosis as to the exact parasite your rabbit is infected with to ensure that ivermectin is indeed the correct medication to use. The veterinarian will also determine the proper dosage to give your rabbit. This is determined using the weight of the rabbit.

    • 2

Discuss with your veterinarian any other medications your rabbit is on. Some medications cannot be combined with ivermectin.

    • 3

Have your veterinarian give the first ivermectin injection and explain how the injection is given. The injection will likely be given subcutaneously. This is where the needle is injected under the skin between the shoulder blades. With your veterinarian̵7;s guidance, you may be able to give the second dose yourself 14 days later.

    • 4

Give the second dose of ivermectin about 14 days (as per your veterinarian's instructions) following the first shot. Give the shot using the same method your veterinarian used.

    • 5

Contact your veterinarian if your rabbit still has symptoms of parasites 30 days after the first shot. You may need to give a third injection at this time (14 days after the second injection).
