How to Build Cages for Flemish Rabbits

Flemish rabbits need custom cages due to their weight and size. You can construct the cage to match the decor of your home and include elements of your personality; however, keep in mind that the cage is an environment for a living creature, so it should provide all of the needs and comforts necessary to make the Flemish rabbit happy.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the plywood no smaller than 30 inches wide and 48 inches long. Cut 4 2X4s at least 48 inches high and 2 2X4s 48 inches long. Sand the wood after cutting it to prevent slivers and injury to the Flemish rabbit or yourself.

Construct a frame for the cage out of the 2X4s. The 4 2X4s will serve as the legs and the 2 2X4s will serve as the base for the plywood floor. Nail them to the legs approximately 24 inches from the bottom to ensure that the floor of the cage is raised off of the ground. Because of the large size of Flemish rabbits, use nails instead of wood glue to hold the frame together.

Add the plywood bottom to the cage. Nail the plywood to the 2 2X4s on the frame and ensure that it is sturdy. A Flemish rabbit can weigh between 14 and 28 lbs. placing a lot of stress on the plywood. Add additional support under the bottom of the plywood as your Flemish rabbit grows.

Decorate the cage. Avoid using items that will make the Flemish rabbit sick when chewed or eaten. Add a litter pan filled with hay and a rabbit chew toy in the cage to minimize urine or chewing damage.
