Rabbits & Kenaf Bedding

Kenaf is a plant originally from Africa that is related to cotton. Its fibers have many uses, including as bedding for animals. Rabbits are popular pets, but you have to be careful about what bedding you use.
  1. Absorbent

    • Kenaf is gaining popularity as bedding for horses because it is more than three times as absorbent as typical wood shavings in horse stalls, according to the BioTech Mills website.

    Inexpensive

    • Kenaf bedding doesn't have to be changed nearly as often as wood shavings, because it is more absorbent. It is left in horse stalls two to four times longer than wood shavings, according to BioTech Mills.

    Health Concerns

    • Wood shavings can't be used for the bedding for rabbits because the phenols cause health problems, including liver and respiratory problems. Cedar chips are the worst and are considered toxic for rabbits.

    Non-toxic

    • Kenaf does not have phenols, so it won't cause liver or respiratory problems.

    Other Problems

    • The HopperHome website does not recommend using kenaf with rabbits because it may be difficult to find, it is very dusty, and if it is ingested, it may cause intestinal blockages unless the rabbit drinks a lot of water.
