History
-
According to Animal World, "rabbits have been around for three to four million years. Today, there are approximately 40 known breeds." In nature, rabbits are known to feed on leaves, grasses, flowers, fruits and vegetables. Pet rabbits benefit from a similar diet plan.
General Nutrition
-
Along with fresh fruit, including apples for snacks and treats, rabbits need a fresh supply of drinking water daily along with hay and dark leafy greens. Favorite dark greens include kale, mustard greens, dandelion greens, parsley and watercress. They may also enjoy carrot and beet tops.
Feeding Schedule
-
Rabbits like to eat around the same time every day and benefit from a consistent feeding routine. A routine helps ensure they do not lose their appetite and become ill. Along with apples, rabbits like bananas, strawberries, kiwi, pears, peaches, and fresh pineapple pieces as snacks. Fresh fruit is better than canned that may have added sugar and is not beneficial to a bunny's overall health.
Chewing Material
-
As their teeth grow constantly, an ample supply of chewing material is a must for pet rabbits. Many pet stores offer fruit flavored chew sticks for small animals that your rabbit would enjoy. Sticks, small logs, and branches that have not been chemically treated also make good chewing surfaces for rabbits.
Handling
-
In addition to feeding your rabbit a variety of dark greens, fruit as treats, and fresh water daily, it is important to handle a rabbit with ease. Never pick them by their shoulders only or their ears. Always support a rabbit's entire body, especially their hind legs, when picking them up.
