How to Build a Bunny House

Proper care of a pet bunny is not complicated, but it does demand some research. One question that many bunny owners have is how to properly house their bunny. There are bunny houses on the market, but it is possible to construct a cage that is appropriate for the bunny's physical needs and comfort. Whether the bunny will be living inside or outside, a bunny house should be constructed so that the bunny will have room to move, a clean area to sleep and eat, and space where he can hide from the outside world.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan the bunny house to include two compartments: one with an open area (enclosed by wire) allowing light and air circulation and a second area that is enclosed so that the bunny can hide when he wants to.

    • 2

Use good quality plywood. If the bunny house will be outdoors, treat the wood by varnishing it so that it will hold up against the weather.

    • 3

Cut two pieces of plywood 30 inches wide by 36 inches long. Lay one on the floor. These will be the floor and roof boards of the bunny house.

    • 4

Cut one plywood board 36 inches long by 18 inches high. This will be the back of the bunny house.

    • 5

Cut one plywood board 18 inches long by 18 inches high, and one board 30 inches long by 18 inches high. These will be the end and side boards of the closed part of the bunny house.

    • 6

Cut two squares 12 inches by 12 inches from the 36- by 18-inch (bunny house back) board. These will be the openings to the cage doors. There will be a door on each side of the bunny house to facilitate cleaning.

    • 7

Attach two hinges to each door opening and the matching hinges to the pieces of wood that were cut out from the door opening. Connect the two sets of hinges. These are the doors of the bunny house.

    • 8

Attach a hook and eye latch to each door and door frame to latch the doors closed.

    • 9

Glue the bottom edges of the side boards to the floor board with wood glue. Clamp the side boards onto the floor board and let stand for several hours to dry.

    • 10

Glue a wooden post, 18 inches high by 2 inches wide, to the remaining corner of the floor board.

    • 11

Wind a piece of 55-inch-long by 18-inch-high wire mesh around the second part of the bunny house. The wire should be attached to the back board, wind around the post and attach to the other 18-inch side board of the bunny house. Attach the wire mesh with heavy staples, using a staple gun, to all edges, including the side walls and the floor board.

    • 12

Cover the plywood floor with a waterproof self-adhesive vinyl film. This will make the cage easy to clean.

    • 13

Put wood glue on the top edge of the side plywood boards and the top of the post. Lay the roof board on top of it. Clamp the roof board down with clamps and let the glue dry for several hours.

    • 14

Attach the wire mesh to the roof board with heavy staples.

    • 15

Glue four 2-inch wooden cubes to the corners of the bunny house to raise it off the ground.

    • 16

Use glue to attach a ramp board, approximately 12 inches wide by 8 inches long, to one of the doors of the bunny house. This will allow the bunny to go in and out of the bunny house when he is allowed out to wander.
