How to Cut Rabbit Fur

There are four different kinds of rabbit fur: normal fur, with a dense undercoat; satin fur that reflects light, giving it a nice sheen; rex fur, which can stand on end, giving it a distinct feel; and Angora fur, which is woolly. Depending on the kind of fur your rabbit has, it may need to be trimmed. The Angoras, in particular, may need their fur trimmed regularly in order to keep the rabbit clean.

For Angora rabbits, it's definitely OK to trim their hair short in order to promote health and cleanliness. Because the fur is so long, it can be difficult for the rabbits to clean themselves, and they will develop knots, tangles and collect dirt in their coat.

Start by brushing the rabbit's fur out to remove all debris and loose hair. Be careful when brushing your rabbit, while their hair is thick, the skin underneath is very tender. Once you've removed all of the excess fur, you'll be able to more easily trim the coat.

To trim Angora rabbit fur, start by making sure the rabbit is calm and comfortable. Place the rabbit on your lap or on a solid surface so it doesn't move suddenly when you begin cutting. Take the hair cutting scissors with one hand and prepare to cut. With the other hand use your fingers to measure a finger-length distance between the rabbit fur and where you will cut. By placing your hand between the scissors on the rabbit, you'll minimize the possibility of harming the rabbit if it is startled. Be sure not to trim too close to the rabbit's skin, as it needs a short layer of fur for protection.
