Problems With Neutering Bunnies

A pet rabbit should be neutered to prevent the birth of unwanted rabbits. This is a surgery unheard of 30 years ago that is happening more often with pet rabbits over the last 20 years. Although the surgery is becoming more commonplace, any surgery on rabbits has risks. Decide with your vet whether your rabbit is a good candidate for surgery.
  1. Time Frame

    • Pet rabbits, male or female, need to be neutered before they are two years old because they are at their strongest. If the rabbit is over six years old, the stress of surgery could be lethal.

    Stitches

    • According to Animal Rescue &Care in the UK, rabbits will commonly chew on their stitches. This means that they need body staples.

    Weight

    • Rabbits that are obese will have problems being able to survive the anesthesia. Only young, healthy rabbits of an ideal weight, male or female, should be neutered.

    Potential

    • Rabbits will be highly stressed when undergoing any surgery. This makes them more prone to getting internal infections at the surgery site.

    Considerations

    • According to the House Rabbit Society, it can be difficult to find a vet that knows how to neuter a rabbit. Make sure your vet has experience with rabbits.
