How to Potty Train a Bunny

Accepting a new family member into a home, especially one as small as a rabbit, can create many new chores, but cleaning up its leavings should not be part of that process. Rabbits can be trained much like cats are, to select a designated area to relieve themselves, rather than anywhere they are allowed to freely explore. With some time and persistence, rabbits can be trained to only use certain areas as a bathroom.

  1. How to Potty Train a Bunny

    • 1

Prepare a litter box for the rabbit; however, do not use the same area that the rabbit sleeps in. Rabbits are naturally clean animals and do not like having their leavings in the same area they sleep or eat. A cat litter box can be used for a rabbit, if the rabbit is able to jump high enough to get in.

    • 2

Insert a plastic liner in the litter box and fill it with recycled shredded paper that has not been printed on or written on with ink. Then cover the paper with grass straw or hay, so the rabbit may dig into it.

    • 3

Place the rabbit in a small room, such as a bathroom. This limits the rabbit's ability to choose where to relieve herself. This is similar to crate training a dog. Placing the litter box in a bathroom, with the rabbit's food and water outside of it, she will eventually find a place to relieve herself.

    • 4

Check on the rabbit often to ensure he is not doing his business in various parts of the bathroom. If you notice the rabbit choosing a corner of the bathroom to deposit his leavings, scold him with a strict tone. After weeks of continuous training, the rabbit should have chosen a corner in the litter box to continuously relieve itself. When not training the rabbit, ensure you are watching him so that if he relieves himself elsewhere, he is scolded.

Choosing between as few locations for the litter box as possible will make the process easier for the rabbit. When not being trained in a bathroom, the litter box should be placed near his housing area so that he becomes familiar with its location after training has been completed.
