Rabbit Birth Control Options

Rabbits are becoming more popular as pets. They are intelligent, can be litter trained and do not require walks. However, more does not mean better when it comes to rabbits. They have an average of four kits (baby rabbits) per litter. Many thousands of rabbits are euthanized annually because they can't find homes. It doesn't have to be that way. There are safe birth control options for pet rabbits.
  1. Keep Just One

    • Keeping just one rabbit is recommended only if you have a lot of time to spend with your rabbit. Otherwise, the rabbit can get ill from the stress of being alone.

    Spaying

    • Female rabbits (does) can be safely spayed just like dogs and cats when they are at least six months old. This often makes them friendlier, too.

    Neutering

    • Neutering is done on male rabbits (bucks) when they are at least six months old. This surgery is usually a lot less expensive than spaying a doe.

    Keeping Sexes Apart

    • You could house bucks and does separately. In that case, make sure the never meet. However, rabbits are good at escaping in order to find a mate.

    Warning

    • You must make sure that the vet your take your rabbit to is experienced with rabbits. They can't handle the same medications as dogs or cats.
