How to Bunny Proof a House
Place cord protectors on all wires in your home. It will protect your electronic appliances and keep them from shorting out if your bunny nibbles on the wires. More importantly, it will keep your bunny out of harms way. Biting on live wires can be fatal. Cord protectors will ease the concern. Put them in every area where your bunny is permitted to play. Cover all cords in the home if your rabbit has run of the house.
Keep all plants off the floor in the area where your bunny plays. Some plants, particularly poinsettias, are posionous and unless you are 100 percent sure they aren't, don't take the chance. Keep plants in high areas where your bunny doesn't roam or keep plants out of the area all together.
Block off the underneath of the couch so your bunny can't slide under it. Use wood blocks to prevent your rabbit from getting underneath. Otherwise, your rabbit may get stuck under the couch or get caught in the mechanism if it's a reclining sofa. Also, keep since rabbits like to jump, keep objects off the couch and other surfaces that may be hazardous to your bunny.
Move all liquids and chemicals such as soaps, detergents and cleaning supplies to a high shelf or locked cabinet. A curious rabbit may ingest the liquid which can be fatal.
Place gates much like a baby gate in the doorways where your bunny will be playing. This will keep them confined to one area and prevent them from getting into the other areas of the house to nibble on and destroy things. This will also keep them from nibbling on the closed door that is keeping them confined to one place. Doors are expensive so avoid having to replace them. In addition, consider adding wire fences to confine your bunny to one area.
Install corner shields, which are available at most do-it-yourself home improvement stores. These shields will keep your bunny from nibbling on the corners of your walls which would be costly and time consuming to replace and potentially harmful to your rabbit.
Secure all areas of your home so that your bunny can not wonder into a room that you don't want them in. For example, keep toilet lids down so your bunny doesn't jump in and get stuck should the lid fall down. Also, keep the bathroom door shut to prevent bunny from hoping into the bathtub and getting hurt trying to get out. Make sure the door to the house is closed so they don't get away and shut the basement door to keep them from getting hurt hoping down the stairs.
