How to Set Up a Playful Environment in a Rabbit's Cage

Rabbits are social animals that make affectionate house pets. They enjoy interacting with humans, can be litter box trained and are usually hardy, easy to care for companions. Because rabbits are naturally inquisitive and intelligent, it is important to maintain a cage environment that is interesting and playful for them.

Instructions

    • 1

Add paper bags and small, cardboard boxes to the cage so that the rabbit can crawl inside. Rabbits also enjoy scratching and chewing paper bags and cardboard.

    • 2

Give the rabbit newspaper pages or phone book pages for shredding.

    • 3

Provide toys for the rabbit's entertainment. Bird toys are particularly good because they usually hang from the top of the cage and rabbits enjoy chewing on them and batting them around. Also add a few hard, lightweight, plastic baby toys--like fake car keys--that the rabbit can toss about.

    • 4

Include a hand towel to the cage so that the rabbit can bunch it up and scoot it around.

    • 5

Create a dig box by filling a small, plastic bin with various, shredable items like magazine and newspaper pages, dry hay and junk mail. Include a few treats at various levels in the box--your rabbit will enjoy finding these hidden treasures.

    • 6

Incorporate a treat tube by taking an empty toilet paper roll and adding a few treats inside. Fold over both ends and poke a few holes along the tube. Your rabbit will like destroying the paper tube to get to the goodies within.
