How to Identify a Rabbit's Gender

You can sometimes identify the gender of older rabbits by simply looking at their features and characteristics. Bucks have a blocky head and body compared to a doe of the same breed. Larger breeds sometimes develop a fold of skin under their chins called a dewlap. To make sure of the sex of the rabbit you are buying, follow the steps below.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear a long-sleeved shirt. Rabbit's nails are sharp, and rabbits may scratch when they are excited or upset.

    • 2

Place one hand loosely on the rabbit's neck and upper shoulder area.

    • 3

Place the other hand under the rabbit and rotate it into the crook of your arm.

    • 4

Hold the rabbit's head slightly lower than its body.

    • 5

Use forefinger and middle finger to press down the vent area. The vent area is just in front of the anus. A doe will have a slit running up and down. A buck will have a pinkish tube with a pointed end.
