How Old Can Baby Bunnies Be When Given Away?

Baby bunnies can be a lot of fun, but as they mature into adults you will need to find them their own homes. If you do not separate your litter of baby bunnies before they reach sexual maturity, you will end up with even more bunnies to find homes for.
  1. Bunny Development

    • Baby bunnies are dependent on their mothers for all their needs when they are first born. By the time your bunnies are 2 weeks old, they should start to nibble on solid feed such as hay and rabbit pellets. Your bunnies will continue to mature and develop, eating solid foods but continuing to nurse on their mother until they reach 8 weeks of age.

    Weaning Your Bunnies

    • Once your baby bunnies are weaned, you can take them away from their mothers. A fully weaned baby bunny will be eating completely on his own, no longer nursing from his mother. If your bunnies have not weaned themselves by 10 weeks old, you may have to take them away from their mother to force them to wean.

    Sexing Your Bunnies

    • Before you give your bunnies away to their new homes, you need to determine which bunnies are boys and which ones are girls. Boy bunnies have two testicles visible between their back legs as well as a penis that should be visible if you gently push down on the bunny's underside near his genital area. Female bunnies may also have a bit of protrusion on their genitals, but the hole in the protrusion will be a slit. The hole on a male bunny is round.

    Sexual Maturity

    • Baby bunnies become sexually mature and are able to reproduce when they are between 3 and 6 months old. You absolutely must have determined the gender of each baby bunny and separated them into single-gender groups or cages before they reach 3 months of age to prevent them from breeding.
