How to Add Levels to a Rabbit Condo

Pet rabbits enjoy having a condo, or multi-level house, as they like to be able to stretch their legs and jump from one area to another. Adding levels to their housing allows them to use their leg muscles and get exercise to help keep them healthy. Rabbits also are naturally curious and like to explore. Condo̵7;s give them the ability to eat on one level, use their litter pan on another level and sleep on a separate level.
  1. Materials Needed

    • To add levels to a rabbit condo you will need wire frames and automotive cable ties to secure them together. You also need plywood, a circular saw and a drill, as well as a measuring tape and wire cutters.

    Preparation

    • Remove the existing roof on your rabbit condo and set it aside. If it is an indoor condo made of wire frames, cut each automotive cable tie that secures the roof. For an outdoor wooden condo, remove the screws that hold the metal roof. Set the roof aside to re-use later. Remove your bunny from the condo and place him in a safe area, such as in a bathroom or cage.

    Walls/Doors

    • Place wire frames on top of the last floor of the condo to extend it upward and create another level. These will form the side walls of the new level. Line up each wire frame on top of the previous floor. Insert an automotive cable tie through the new wire frame of the new floor and the existing frame and pull it tight to hold it in place. Use one wire tie for each corner of each wire frame. Add walls in this manner to the front, rear and one side of the condo. Attach the wire frames on the last side, but leave one side of a frame unattached to make a door. The door will swivel on wire ties on one side like hinges and the other side will close.

    Floors

    • Measure your rabbit condo̵7;s length and width. Divide the length measurement by 2. For example, if your condo is 5 feet long and 4 feet wide, divide 5 by 2 to obtain 2.5 feet. A floor board to fit across half of the condo would be 2.5 feet long and 4 feet wide in this example. Measure, mark and cut a piece of plywood to size using a circular saw. Drill a 1/2-inch hole in each corner of the wood. Place the wood into the condo for a new floor and attach each of the four sides to the walls with wire ties through the corner holes.

    Finishing

    • Add more levels if you want the condo taller. Place each new floor on the opposite side from the floor below to allow your rabbit room to jump from one level to the other. Replace the roof in the same manner as you removed it after you get to the height you desire.

    Tips

    • Making a door on each level assists you in easy cage cleanup.

You can glue indoor/outdoor carpet to the wooden floors for your rabbit's comfort while lying down.

If your rabbit is older and cannot jump well from one level to the next, cut plywood ramps to fit between each floor.
