How to Give a Rabbit Simethicone Drops

Just like humans, rabbits can experience gas buildup. The trapped gas in your rabbit's intestines and stomach is as uncomfortable for the rabbit as it is for you, or more so -- it is often painful and is potentially life-threatening. Pediatric simethicone drops can help give your rabbit some relief. Simethicone drops help ease stomach tension and promote the elimination of gas by breaking down gas bubbles. Administering simethicone drops to your rabbit can be challenging, though. Learning the proper technique can make the experience a more pleasant one to you and the rabbit.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a quiet room where you can administer pediatric simethicone to your rabbit. Avoid loud noises and other distractions that can startle your rabbit.

    • 2

Fill an eye dropper with approximately 1ml to 3ml of pediatric simethicone. Use up to 2ml for small rabbits under 6 lbs.; use 3ml for rabbits that weigh 6 lbs. or more.

    • 3

Spread a towel horizontally on a table or the floor.

    • 4

Swaddle your rabbit: Place the rabbit in the center of the towel. Bring the left and right sides of the towel together and wrap them over your rabbit. Wrap only your rabbit's legs and body -- not its head.

    • 5

Position yourself behind your rabbit, so it is facing away from you.

    • 6

Administer the pediatric simethicone. Lift one side of your rabbit's upper lip with the index finger of one hand. Position the eye dropper in the opening, behind the front teeth. Squeeze the eye dropper slowly to release the liquid. Avoid quickly administering all the liquid, because doing so may cause your rabbit to choke.
