How to Make a Rabbit Cage Out of Wood

You have many ways to keep your rabbit corralled while you are away from home during the day. Although you can opt to buy a rabbit cage for this purpose, building your own cage will allow you to create a custom solution that's just right for your rabbit's needs. You can build a rabbit cage with a variety of materials, but wooden cages will give you an elegant look and the chance to create an elaborate playhouse for your rabbit. Fortunately, wooden rabbit cages are not very difficult to build, and the project can save you from having to buy an expensive ready-made model. If you can cut wood and drill screws, you are already well on your way to building the perfect wooden rabbit cage for your furry friend.

Instructions

  1. Cutting the Panels

    • 1

Measure and draw two rectangle panels that measure 48 inches in length by 20 inches in width. These panels will form the long sides of the rabbit cage.

    • 2

Measure and draw two rectangle panels that measure 48 inches in length by 18 inches in width. These panels will form the top and bottom of the rabbit cage.

    • 3

Measure and draw two rectangle panels that measure 20 inches in length by 18 inches in width. These panels will form the short sides of the rabbit cage.

    • 4

Measure and draw a square panel that measures 12 inches in length by 12 inches in width. This panel will be used as a door for the rabbit cage.

    • 5

Cut all of the panels from the wood using a circular saw.

    Making the Window and Door

    • 6

Cut a 46-by-16-inch rectangle from one of the 48-by-18-inch rectangles that you have cut.

    • 7

Cover the rectangle hole by attaching a 47-by-17-inch rectangle of mesh wire cloth over it. Be sure to drill one screw and screw washer on each corner of the mesh wire cloth.

    • 8

Cut two squares measuring 10-by-10 inches each from one of the 48-by-20-inch rectangles. These squares should be side by side and at least 18 inches apart.

    • 9

Cover one of the square holes by attaching an 11-by-11-inch square of mesh wire cloth over it. Drill one screw and screw washer on each corner of the mesh wire cloth. This will be a window for your rabbit cage.

    • 10

Attach the 12-by-12-inch square panel over the other square using a small concealed door hinge. Install the hinge on the bottom of the door so that your rabbit will be able to use the panel as an exit ramp from the cage. Make sure to screw the hinge to the square panel before hanging it on the larger rectangular panel.

    • 11

Install a hook and eye latch for the square door panel. Be sure to screw the hook onto the rectangular panel and the eye onto the cage door.

    Finishing the Cage

    • 12

Screw the bottom and side rectangular panels to each other. The rectangular panel with the door and window should be on the front of the cage. Side panels with the same length and width should be facing each other.

    • 13

Attach the top rectangular panel to the back panel using three large door hinges. Be sure to screw the hinges to the top panel before screwing them into the back panel. Place the hinges at least 12 inches apart.

    • 14

Attach the wooden blocks to the four corners of the bottom rectangular panel with wood glue. Make sure that all four corners of the cage are at the same height when placed on a flat surface.

    • 15

Sand the rabbit cage with sandpaper. This will remove any splinters from the wood that may hurt your rabbit.

    • 16

Slide the plastic tray under the cage. This tray will act as a litter box for your rabbit so that the waste pellets do not soil your household surfaces.
