How to Keep a Rabbit in the Garage During the Cold

While some people choose to keep a pet rabbit indoors, others prefer to keep them outside to help curb the smell. When the cold winter months hit, a pet rabbit should not be left outside. Instead of bringing the rabbit into your house, you can make a cozy place for it to stay in your garage. If you do choose to keep your rabbit in the garage, it is important that you don't use the garage for your vehicles at the same time to avoid killing your rabbit with the car exhaust.

Place your rabbit's cage into the garage. If you have an attached garage, choose a location along the joint wall so some of the heat from your home can help warm the cage. Avoid placing the cage near a drafty door or window.

Fill the bottom of the cage with a thick layer of dry straw or hay to provide a warm floor for your rabbit. Change the straw or hay as needed to keep it dry and clean.

    • 3

Add a nesting box to the cage to give your rabbit a place to build a nest. Fill this box with straw or hay as well and keep it clean and dry.

    • 4

Cover the cage with a canvas cover or plywood panels at night to help keep the rabbit warm on the cool nights. Leave ventilation spaces so the rabbit receives adequate air flow. Remove the cover during the daytime hours so your rabbit can enjoy the sunlight and the warmth it provides.

Run an electric heater in the garage if you are worried about the temperature. Don't use a gas-powered heater because it can release dangerous fumes that can make your rabbit ill or kill it.
