How Do I Get a Rabbit to Stop Eating Sheetrock Walls?

Often mistaken as rodents, rabbits are actually part of the lagomorph order. Several types of rabbits exist around the world and all instinctively chew and dig. This behavior turns into a problem when your pet rabbit begins to chew on household items, including sheet rock walls. Alleviate problematic rabbit chewing with a two-step approach. First, directly address the behavioral issue by reducing your rabbit's desire to chew on the sheet rock. Second, make a homemade rabbit repellent mixture to keep your pet rabbit at bay.

Place extra chew toys inside your rabbit's cage. Rabbits tend to have a "stubborn" approach to chewing. When they start chewing one item, it's difficult to make them stop. Extra chew toys keep your pet rabbit preoccupied and alleviate the desire to chew on your sheet rock and other household items.

Pour two quarts of water into a large mixing bowl and chop one onion and one hot pepper (i.e. jalapeno) and add to the bowl. Next, add one teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Mix and let stand for 20 minutes.

Place a funnel into a spray bottle. Insert a coffee filter into the funnel and pour the mixture into the bottle. The coffee filter prevents pieces of onion and hot pepper from entering the spray bottle. Remove the funnel and close the bottle when finished.

Lightly spray around the bottom of the sheet rock. This mixture does not harm your rabbits but has an unpleasant taste they want to avoid. Keep the spray in your refrigerator to keep fresh and use periodically if you find your rabbits chewing on the sheet rock again.
