How to Make a Bed for Baby Bunnies

Ideally, baby bunnies should sleep in a bed that is lined with timothy hay and their mother's fur. If this isn't possible because the mother rabbit has passed away or if you were given a baby bunny as a rescue pet, you need to provide alternative accommodations for the bunny to sleep on until the bunny is more than 2 months old. At this age, bunnies can sleep in a cage with a flat piece of wood placed on the floor.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the thermostat in the room in which you intend to keep the bunny between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 2

Line a deep box with a blanket and then place a folded towel on top of the blanket. Fill the box half way with timothy hay and depress the hay in the center of the box with a closed fist to make a burrow or bed.

    • 3

Cover the box with another towel and fold the corner of the towel back to open up the corner of the box to allow air flow into the box. Fold the towel one-third of the way back after the bunny reaches 12 days of age or it opens its eyes completely.

    • 4

Set the box in a safe, quiet room that doesn't get a lot of foot traffic. Wait two weeks and then unfold the towel another one-third of the way back so the box now is uncovered by two-thirds.

    • 5

Move the box into a cage that has fine mesh walls when the bunny gets older and starts to hop out of the box. Line the floor of the cage with kiln dried aspen shavings and timothy hay.

    • 6

Remove the towel covering from the box after another two weeks have passed.
