Can you reuse a cage that was previously used for rabbit with myxomatosis?

It is generally not recommended to reuse a cage that was previously used for a rabbit with myxomatosis. Myxomatosis is a highly contagious viral disease that can be fatal to rabbits, and the virus can survive in the environment for several months.

To prevent the spread of myxomatosis, it is important to thoroughly disinfect the cage and any other objects that may have been contaminated with the virus. This includes washing the cage and all accessories (food and water bowls, toys, etc.) with hot water and bleach or another disinfectant, and then rinsing the cage thoroughly with water.

The cage should then be left to air dry completely before being used again. If possible, it is best to let the cage sit empty for several weeks before reusing it to help ensure that the virus has been eliminated.

In addition to disinfecting the cage, it is also important to wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling the cage and any objects that may have been contaminated with the virus. This will help prevent the spread of the virus to other rabbits.

If you have any questions about myxomatosis or how to disinfect a cage, please contact your veterinarian.
