Why do rabbits have wet feces?

Rabbits produce two types of feces: hard fecal pellets and soft, dark green caecotrophs. Caecotrophs are also known as "night feces" because rabbits typically produce them at night. Caecotrophs are softer than fecal pellets because they contain more moisture. This moisture is necessary to help the rabbit digest the cecotrophs, which contain a high concentration of nutrients.

Rabbits re-ingest their caecotrophs, which allows them to extract the nutrients from the food they have already eaten. This process is known as coprophagy and is an important part of the rabbit's digestive system. Rabbits only produce caecotrophs when they are eating a diet high in fiber. If your rabbit is not producing caecotrophs, it may be a sign that they are not getting enough fiber in their diet.
