How to Train a Rat to Clap

Your pet rat can be trained to do many tricks, all it takes is a little time and persistence. Training a rat is a lot like training a cat rather than the eager-to-please dog, so keep this in mind when you begin. Training your rat to clap on command is a great trick to try.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a treat above your rat's head and say "clap."

    • 2

Say "clap" again to train him and as he begins to reach up for the treat move the treat slightly out of his reach so that his paws will come together when he misses it.

    • 3

Repeat this three times then give him the treat to train him and reinforce the command.

    • 4

Follow through with these steps frequently as needed to train him until he begins to recognize and follow the "clap" command when given.

    • 5

Practice this trick several times a week after you have trained your rat to clap on command. Your rat will likely forget his trick if you aren't consistent.
