How to Build a Rat House

Rats require an environment that stimulates them mentally and allows them to fulfill their natural instincts of hiding, burrowing, chewing and climbing. Some pet stores sell rat-home starter kits; however, these are usually too small for adult rats and are overpriced. With a little imagination and knowledge of rat behavior, you can create an ideal home for your rats.

Instructions

Find an adequate enclosure for your rat's home. Wire cages are preferred over aquariums because they allow for adequate ventilation. Make sure any cage you use is tall enough for the rats to climb. You can buy a specialty rat cage online or use a bird cage made for larger birds. The minimum size for a rat cage holding two rats should be 18 by 30 by 18 inches, and the bar should be spaced no more than half an inch apart. Most rat cages sold in pet stores do not meet this requirement. The more rats you have, the larger the cage needs to be.

Fill the bottom of the rat cage with untreated paper bedding. Other bedding -- such as pine and cedar -- releases oils that can harm your rats' respiratory system. If you want to litter train your rats, buy a rodent litter pan and fill it with paper bedding. Line the bottom of the cage with old rags and cloth to avoid blisters on the rats' feet.

Add hideouts and climbing structures for the rats to climb and explore. Rat hammocks sold in pet stores make great places for rats to sleep and climb. Bird toys and ladders, untreated wood, and ropes also make great rat climbing structures. Use small cardboard boxes to act as both a chewing substance and hideouts for your rats.
