Instructions

Fill a pet water bottle and attach it to the side of the tank or cage. Rats need fresh water available to them at all times, and a water bottle allows the rat a constant supply of water that cannot be knocked over like a dish can be.

    • 2

Fill a ceramic dish with laboratory pellets. Choose laboratory pellets that were specially formulated for rats. Lab pellets may be up to 80 percent of the pet rat's diet.

    • 3

Chop up vegetables into 1-inch chunks to give to your rat. Vegetables like kale, carrots, sweet potatoes and broccoli are all acceptable vegetables for the rat. Wash the vegetables before feeding them to your rat to remove traces of pesticides.

    • 4

Place the vegetables into the ceramic dish along with the laboratory pellets.

    • 5

Give your rats seeds and nuts sparingly and only as treats. While rats love the fatty seeds and nuts, too many of these items can cause problems.
