How to Take Pictures of Rats

All rat owners and photographers know that photographing rats, like other small rodents, is a difficult process. The rats have a hard time staying still and tend to move at the last second. All the movements the rat makes will make your pictures blurry and unusable. But just because it is difficult to photograph a rat, do not think it is impossible. With the right equipment and directions, you can start taking professional-looking pictures of your rat in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the fleece fabric over the surface you wish to photograph your rat. Place the fabric in a bundle so it rises up behind the rat.

    • 2

Place the lamp in front of the fleece fabric and remove the lamp cover. Turn on the lamp and make sure the lamp is in front of the fabric but not in the way of your shot. The lamp will help distract your rat, so move it to the side if you want side shots of your rat.

    • 3

Set your digital camera to macro mode. Macro mode can be identified by a little flower icon. Take practice shots to ensure the lighting is correct in the room.

    • 4

Place your rat in its cage and encourage it to exercise before taking it out for the pictures.

    • 5

Place your rat on the fleece fabric and give the rat a few minutes so it gets comfortable with its surroundings.

    • 6

Turn on the lamp and take pictures as your rat is staring at the lamp. If your rat is still moving around, try to gently hold the rat down while pressing the shutter button with your other hand. Release the rat and simultaneously click the shutter button with your other hand. It might take a few practice shots before you get the release-and-press technique down.
