How to Kill Tropical Rat Mites

Knowing how to get rid of rat mites on your own prevents you from having to hire a professional to do it for you. Rat mites are small bugs, or parasites, that feed on rats. Rat mites cause irritation to the rats' skin leaving signs of their presence on the skin, such as sores and bald patches. For the sake of your pet rat's comfort and overall well being, immediate action must be taken to get rid of these intrusive parasites.

  • New rat cage
  • Dish soap
  • Water
  • Rag
  • Ivermectin

      Remove your rats from their cage and place them in another cage or safe place while you clean it.

      Clear out the infested cage. Throw away all bedding and stuffed toys because the mites are likely imbedded in these fabrics. Scrub down the infested cage with soap and water.

      Dry the cage, add fresh bedding then put your rats back in it.

      Dose a small piece of bread with ivermectin mite medication and feed it to your rats. Follow your veterinarian's recommendations for dosage. You vet may choose to prescribe Ivermectin to be applied topically. Rats need to be treated with Ivermectin once a week for three weeks to rid them of mites.
