How Can I Get My Rat to Roll in His Ball?

It is a well known fact that rats are keen and intelligent. However, very few people are aware that pet rats can be trained to do tricks and play games. These tricks can range from jumping through hoops to coming when called. Rats can be trained to roll around in a plastic ball. This allows it to get proper exercise without the worry of it getting into something it shouldn't. Also, once your rat masters this trick, you can also teach it to come when called. That way, when you call its name, it will come to you in the ball. The possibilities are endless.

Buy a large rat-sized ball at your local grocery or pet store. Get the one that is advertised as a ball for large rodents such as rats or ferrets. While the largest balls are the most expensive, this is one place you don't want to pinch pennies. If the ball is too small for your rat, it will be cramped and not an enjoyable experience for your furry friend. Even if the ball seems too big for your rat, opt for the bigger one rather than the smaller. Make sure that the ball has a locking door so that the rat won't be able to escape. The balls come in a variety of colors. Clear is the most popular because it is easier for your rat to see where it is going.

Open the locking door to the ball and gently set your rat inside. Rather than shove your rat into the ball, try to let it go into the ball on its own. If you are too rough in getting the rat into the ball, it won't have a good first experience. Lock the door on the ball and check it to be sure it is secure.

Set the ball in the middle of an open room and let it be. Don't let children, dogs or cats around the ball; they might push the ball around and scare the rat. While the rat may not roll around in the ball the first few times, don't worry. Once the rat gets the idea of how to make the ball move, it will be off on its own little adventure in no time.

Make the ball a part of your rat's regular play schedule. If you let a lot of time lapse between each occasion your rat uses the ball, it may forget how to navigate the ball. Make sure to keep patient and don't get upset with your rat if it doesn't like rolling around in the ball at first. If after being placed in the ball a few times, your rat still hasn't caught on, trying placing the ball in a dim room. Rats are most active at night and may respond better to lower lighting.

Clean out the ball after each use. Use wet wipes to sanitize the ball so that it is ready for the next use.
