How to Get Your Rat to Trust You

Domestic rats make good pets because they are intelligent and sociable. However, some rats may be naturally timid, particularly if they have just joined your household. Gentle handling coupled with positive reinforcement will help build trust. Giving your rat the companionship and exercise it needs and providing a comfortable living environment will also strengthen the bond between you and your pet.

Speak to your pet gently before handling it. This reassures the rat that you mean it no harm. The rat will feel less frightened if you talk to it for a few minutes before attempting to lift it.

Handle the rat correctly. When picking it up, gently place your hand beneath its chest behind its front legs. Support the rat's hindquarters with your other hand. Rats that have been handled from birth generally feel relaxed about human contact, as this is part of the socialization process. However, correct handling will help to reassure an older rat that has just joined your household.

Try handling the rat just after you feed it. According to the PetRat.Info website, rats should be handled as much as possible to help with the socialization process. Try placing the rat inside your sweater or letting it ride around on your shoulder.

Tempt the rat with treats. Coaxing it onto your hand with food builds trust and positive reinforcement, as the rat comes to perceive its owner as a source of nourishment. A nervous rat might not eat out of your hand immediately, but if you hold out food in your hand or on a spoon and reward it each time it comes a little closer, your pet will gradually gain confidence. Offer healthy treats, as rats need fresh wholesome foods such as brown rice, vegetables and lean meats.

Provide a cozy and inviting nest. Rats need a nest box in addition to their cage. Nest boxes can be improvised from empty cardboard boxes or a small bucket laid on its side. Place the box inside the rat's cage and your rat will get busy creating a warm and secure nest for itself. A rat that has a secure nest to hide inside or sleep in will feel more confident about interacting with its owner.
