Fenoprofen belongs to a group of pain medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that relieve pain, inflammation, and fever. Like other NSAIDs, fenoprofen inhibits an enzyme known as cyclooxygenase (COX) which is involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins that play a major role in mediating inflammation, fever, and transmitting the sensation of pain to the brain. By blocking COX enzyme, production of prostaglandins is blocked resulting in a reduction of inflammation, fever, and pain. Additionally, it possesses some mild analgesic activity due to its weak COX-2 enzyme inhibition in the central nervous system (CNS).
