How to Cut the Heads Off of Mealworms for Bearded Dragons

Mealworms make a nutritious treat for your bearded dragon. It is not a good idea to feed them mealworms to a young dragon very often. According to the University of Miami, mealworms are high in chitin, which can cause fatal impaction in the digestion system. You may also remove the heads of the mealworms before feeding dragon to avoid the worms from biting once they are inside the lizard. Incidents of bearded dragons harmed from mealworms biting their way out of the intestines are unconfirmed.

      Cover the surface of you counter of table with newspaper or paper bags.

      Place the mealworms on the paper. Place only as many as you will use at a time.

      Locate the head of the mealworm. The head is darker in color than the tail and is large and rounded. The tail of the mealworm is pointed.

      Cut the top segment of the mealworm off using a sharp knife. Hand-feed the mealworms to your bearded dragon. Place the worm in front of your dragons head and offer it for him to eat.

      Dispose of all paper and mealworm heads. Wash the knife well with soap and water.
