Licenses Needed to Import Reptiles

Importing a reptile into the United States is a regulated process that requires a special permit. One of the reasons a permit or license is needed is to control the types of species that enter into the country. Another reason has to do with ensuring that the reptile being imported is not on the endangered species list. Before bringing your reptile across U.S. borders it is important to find out what permit requirements apply to you.
  1. Permit

    • If you plan to bring any type of wildlife into the United States, you must contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to find out about applicable permits. The FWS website or information line can tell you whether the reptile you are interested in importing is on the protected animals list. According to FWS, if you find that your reptile is on the protected animals list, and is protected by more than one law or treaty, you are required to obtain all permits or licenses that apply. (See Reference 1.)

    Regulations

    • Permits through the Fish and Wildlife Service have regulations associated with them. It is advisable for individuals who wish to import a reptile to read the corresponding regulations so that they know what the rules of the permits are. The regulations also have a section that defines "reptile" and lists the types of reptiles that are acknowledged by the FWS. (See Reference 2.)

    Application

    • An application for a reptile permit can be obtained through the Fish and Wildlife Service website. Keep in mind that permits distributed by the Fish and Wildlife Service may be referred to as licenses, letters of authorization or certificates. Applicants must fill out Form 3-200 and provide all the necessary information that the form solicits. Leaving blanks on the application can result in a delay in processing, and the FWS may have to contact you for further inquiries. Issuance is only completed if all documents and processing fees are received within the allotted time frame.

    Ports

    • Your port assignment will be dictated by the Fish and Wildlife Service once you have obtained your permit. A port is where you have the authority to which to import your reptile. Check the port destination list on the FWS website to see which port is closest to you.

    Enforcement

    • Failure to comply with the terms outlined in the regulations section of your permit can result in enforcement activities. It is important to be aware that the Fish and Wildlife Service holds the right to monitor permit holders and perform investigations when they feel it is necessary.
