How to Care for Hermit Crab Eggs

Hermit crabs are a popular pet for those who enjoy watching the day-to-day adventures of aquatic life. Crabs enjoy an aquarium that somewhat mimics their natural environment. The happier the crab the more likely that it will breed with a mate. It is important to make sure that when purchasing hermit crabs that you get a male and a female. When your hermit crab lays eggs in the winter months, it is best to provide the best care for the eggs as possible to ensure hatching.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect your female hermit crab for eggs. Female hermit crabs will carry their eggs for one month prior to hatching. The eggs turn from bright red to gray as the embryos use the yolk supply.

    • 2

Keep the water temperature around 72 F. Hermit crabs have a difficult time surviving temperatures that are too cold or hot. In addition, eggs that hatch will be cast into the water which should be as closely regulated as possible.

    • 3

Check your filter to ensure that when the eggs hatch they are not sucked up in the filtration system.

    • 4

Place a piece of coral in the water that has had enough time to cycle in the tank, so the hermit crab can cast her eggs from the coral when they are ready to hatch.
