How to Find Large Driftwood or Logs for My Iguana Habitat

Iguanas are not low maintenance pets. They grow very fast, reaching lengths of up to 6 feet in the first three years of life. They require an environment that can be closely and consistently monitored for temperature, humidity and cleanliness. This level of care requires a lot of equipment, the most important of which is a large enclosure that caters to the iguana's natural love of climbing and its innate need to have a space where it is out of sight. Luckily, there are numerous options available to iguana lovers so you can provide your pet with wood to climb and hide on regardless of your budget.

Look on your property for fallen logs or tree limbs. If you are lucky enough to own a wooded property there is inevitably a large quantity of downed timber. Get permission from landowners you know to look for logs on their property. You must be extremely particular about the quality of logs you gather. When they are full grown, iguanas are heavy lizards. Do not gather any wood that shows signs of rot, disease or pests, as it can break, causing injury to your pet.

Visit the local shoreline to peruse the beach for driftwood. Prior to collecting any wood from the beach, make sure that the beach is not a national or state park, wildlife sanctuary or private property. In these areas, collecting anything--driftwood include--is illegal. Good driftwood is dry and smooth in texture. Wash the driftwood thoroughly to remove all sand particles before placing it in your iguana enclosure.

For climbing, construct a ramp from another board so the iguana has access to each perch.
