How to Make a Heat Rock

Heat rocks are used to provide man-made heat for reptiles and other coldblooded creatures. Store-bought heat rocks might provide too much heat, burning the skin of the reptile. As an alternative, soapstone can radiate heat for hours after a fire is extinguished. By using a UV-B light in combination with a soapstone rock, you can make a safer alternative heat rock for your reptile or pet.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the back of a 60-watt UV-B basking lamp on top of your aquarium.

    • 2

Glue the back portion of the lamp to the lid of the aquarium or enclosure, using super glue. Let the glue dry for 10 seconds.

    • 3

Cut a 1/2-inch hole on the side of the aquarium lid, using a utility knife. Pull the power cord through the hole in the aquarium lid.

    • 4

Position a soapstone on the bottom of the aquarium, directly under the UV-B lamp.

    • 5

Plug an electronic timer into the power outlet. Set the electronic timer for three hours on and three hours off. Plug the power cord into the electronic timer. The soapstone radiates heat even though the UV-B lamp is powered off.
