Things You'll Need
- lumber
- plexiglass or glass
- wood screws
- waterproof sealant
Instructions
Research your lizard's needs. Arboreal species like the green iguana will need a taller cage. Ground dwellers will need room to maneuver. Construct the cage large enough for the adult size of your lizard unless you are planning to build another vivarium later.
Draw a diagram of your vivarium that meets your lizard's needs. For example, do you want all sides to be clear, or only the front? How large will the door need to be to easily access all parts of the vivarium? Will it be planted?
Frame your vivarium by determining if the walls will be clear or constructed of hardwood or plywood. If you are creating a vivarium where all sides are clear, frame it with lumber strong enough to support the plexiglass and any climbing shelves you may adhere while being thin enough that the walls do not obstruct your view. Attach frame pieces with L-brackets and wood screws. Sand any rough edges for the safety of your lizard and seal any seams with a waterproof sealant.
Add mesh to form the roof. A mesh roof allows you to place lights on top of the cage to provide the full-spectrum UV lighting and heating that most lizards require.
Hang the plexiglass if you are creating clear sides on your vivarium. Drill holes into the plexiglass and screw it to the wood using rubber washers to prevent fracture of the plexiglass. Seal all seams with a waterproof sealant.
Create a hinged or sliding door. Make a simple hinged door by framing the door in wood and attaching plexiglass to the frame with a handle and hinge. Ensure the door opens outward. Construct a sliding door by installing runners on the top and bottom of your door frame. Hire a specialist to precut the glass doors.
Add shelves for arboreal species. Lizards that live in trees in the wild will have less stress if they can climb in their vivarium. Construct shelving to provide this option for your lizard. Cover wooden planks in carpeting or opt for the natural look of cured branches suspended at different heights. The weight and size of your lizard will determine which works best. Attach wooden shelves for larger lizards, using wood screws or L-brackets. Use suspended branches attached with wood screws for smaller lizards.
